Preview of the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl with Boise State vs Oregon State

SheratonhawaiibowllogoThe Sheraton Hawaii Bowl is a postseason college football game that has been taking place in Honolulu at Aloha Stadium every December since 2002.  The Sheraton Hawaii Bowl pits a team from Conference USA against a team from the Mountain West conference.  If the University of Hawaii is bowl eligible at the end of the college football regular season, then they automatically receive the Mountain West’s spot in the game.

History

The University of Hawaii has played in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl more times than any other team with six appearances.  There three wins is also more than any other team in the history of the game.  The only other team to win the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl more than once is SMU, who has won both of their appearances in the Hawaii Bowl in 2009 and 2012.  The 2013 edition of the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl pits Oregon State of the Pac-12 against Boise State of the Mountain West conference.  Oregon State was granted a spot in the 2013 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl because Conference USA did not have enough bowl eligible teams to fill all of their bowl game obligations.

How Oregon State Got There

The Oregon State Beavers got off to a great start in the 2013 college football season, but they could not keep up the momentum to finish the season.  After losing their first game, the Oregon State Beavers won their next six games.  Following the six straight wins, Oregon State would go on to lose their final five games.  Oregon State had a hard time keeping up with the top teams in the Pac-12 conference towards the end of the season, but they still came very close to pulling off an upset against the 12th ranked Oregon Ducks in the final game of the season.  The Oregon Ducks would score a game winning touchdown with 44 seconds to take a one point lead to win the game 36-35.  A win over Oregon State would have gotten the Beavers a much more prestigious bowl game, but they will be making a trip to Hawaii instead.

How Boise State Got There

Boise State automatically earned their berth in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl by finishing third in the Mountain West conference, but they had a very good chance of having a much better season.  Boise State was poised to play in the Mountain West conference championship game heading into the final two games of the season.  Boise State essentially had to head into San Diego State and win a tough game to lock up a spot in the conference title game, but they would blow an early lead and fall to the Aztecs 34-31 in overtime.  One more victory would have given Boise State the chance to play in the Poinsettia Bowl or the Las Vegas Bowl, the two premiere bowls for the Mountain West conference.

Game Odds

Despite the five game losing streak, the Oregon State Beavers are still three point favorites over the Boise State Broncos for their Christmas Eve match-up in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.  Oregon State may have a worse record, but they faced far superior talent all season in the Pac-12 conference.  Oregon State proved what type of team they can be in the game against Oregon, but it remains to be seen if they will bring the same intensity to the Hawaii Bowl.  The three point line is also reflective of a Boise State team that is going to have to play this game without their head coach after he left the team to take the head coaching job at the University of Washington.
